When I ask Rohit what the role of Carpets of Kashmir is in the new age designs, he states that ‘they have been stubborn’ in adapting the new-age designs, although they are ‘unapologetic’ about it. The Carpets of Kashmir company is still very much rooted in the older tradition. Every rug will always have a story, they are still drawn on paper, that is what they believe in. The contemporary designs that are made fall under a different brand called Knot and Tuft. These contemporary carpets are mostly made in Varanasi, a city in India.
The family story of Carpets of Kashmir was started by Mr. K. L. Sharma, the grandfather of Rohit, around 50 years ago. They started out in the textile business in the city of Srinagar. There they slowly grow by accepting all kinds of textile orders. By combining the carpet art of Kashmir, and the knowledge of textile the beginnings of Carpets of Kashmir were started.
On their website, you will have a lot of different styles and sizes to choose from. What makes the company unique, is the ability of the clients to make custom orders.
